Participate in Shaping Malawi’s Future

As the countdown to the highly anticipated September 25, 2025, elections continues, it is crucial for every eligible Malawian to embrace their civic duty by engaging in the ongoing voter registration exercise. With the first phase already completed, the second phase presents an opportunity for those who have not registered to do so, and it is a call to action for all to take part in this critical process of national transformation.

The right to vote is a cornerstone of democracy which empowers citizens to choose leaders who represent their interests, advocate for their needs, and guide the country toward progress. In a nation as diverse as Malawi, where development aspirations are guided by principles of equity, justice, and prosperity, participating in elections is more than just a right; it is a duty to contribute to the country’s future guided by Islamic principles.

Participating in voting is deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam, which emphasize justice, consultation, and the well-being of society. The Qur’an encourages believers to handle affairs with mutual consultation (Shura), which highlights the importance of being active participants in decision-making: “And those who have responded to their Lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves…” (Qur’an 42:38).

Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized accountability, saying, “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.” (Bukhari and Muslim). Voting allows Muslims to fulfill this responsibility by encouraging them to elect leaders who uphold justice and welfare.

For both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, participating in the electoral process is a means to effect change. It ensures that the voices of diverse communities are heard and that the country’s leadership reflects the will and aspirations of its people. Registering to vote and participating in elections is a collective action that safeguards democracy and promotes the well-being of our nation.

The Malawi Electoral Commission has emphasized the importance of registering early to avoid last-minute inconveniences. The current voter registration phase provides a convenient opportunity for citizens to make sure they are part of the electoral roll. Every vote counts, and everyone’s participation could be pertient in deciding the nation’s future. By voting, you have a say in selecting leaders who will prioritize development, equity, and the well-being of all Malawians. Registering to vote helps ensure the integrity of the electoral process and strengthens democracy.

As we approach the September 2025 elections, let us all, regardless of faith or background, commit to participating in this democratic exercise. By registering to vote and showing up on election day, we honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our democratic rights and play an active role in shaping a better future for Malawi.
