True Joy of Shared Feast

Mustafa Makumba

The spirit of Eid is something that truly warms the heart, and as we look back on the celebrations from Saturday, the 21st March, there is so much to be thankful for. After a month of dedicated fasting and quiet reflection, the day of Eid arrived as a beautiful gift, not just for those who were at the masjid, but for our entire community. It was a day when our streets came alive with genuine smiles and the heavy, sweet scent of good food filled the air in every neighbourhood. We saw children running around in their bright new clothes and families coming together to share the little they have, proving once again that our strength lies in our togetherness.

This celebration teaches us a very important lesson about being our brother’s keeper, a value that sits at the very core of our culture. The joy of Eid is only considered complete when we ensure that those who are struggling also have something to put on the table. The Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” (Bukhari and Muslim). This is a powerful reminder that our individual happiness is forever tied to the well-being of the person living next door. When we share a plate of rice or even a simple, sincere greeting with a stranger, we are doing the heavy work of building a more united and compassionate country.

As the festive decorations come down and we return to the grind of our daily routines, the real challenge is to keep that kindness alive. The lessons of patience and the spirit of giving we practiced should not be packed away with our Sunday best. Life can be very tough, especially with the hardships many are facing lately, but when we carry the spirit of generosity in our hearts, we find the collective strength to face any storm. Let us continue to show real compassion to the needy and deep love to our kin, making every day feel a little bit like that blessed Saturday. The Quran tells us in Surah Ibrahim, “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you”.
