Are We Witnessing the Signs of the End?
By Mustafa Makumba
In recent weeks, powerful earthquakes have struck different parts of the world. Indonesia was hit by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on August 15, killing dozens and triggering landslides that blocked roads and hampered rescue efforts. Colombia was struck by another powerful earthquake earlier this month, while Venezuela is still dealing with the aftermath of major earthquakes that hit in June.
Meanwhile, wildfires have swept across parts of Europe. Greece, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Belgium have faced destructive fires, forcing thousands from their homes. In Belgium alone, around 3,000 hectares were burned in one of the country’s largest modern wildfires.
For an ordinary person, these are simply mere occurrences. But for a person who believes that this world has an appointed end, such scenes carry another message that the world we consider permanent is not permanent.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned us about the approach of the Hour: “Earthquakes will increase in number.” (Bukhari)
He also mentioned three great landslides, one in the East, one in the West and one in the Arabian Peninsula, among the major signs preceding the Last Hour. (Muslim)
Speaking about eclipses, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the Sun and Moon are among the signs of Allah and instructed people to turn to prayer and remembrance when they occur. (Bukhari)
Perhaps the most important question is not whether we can match today’s headlines to a particular prophecy. It is whether these events are making us more awake to the reality that the Hour is coming. We do not know when it will arrive. But we know it will. That knowledge should change how we live today.
A disaster can leave people suddenly separated from their possessions, homes and plans. The same is true of death. What seemed important yesterday can become meaningless in a moment. So, while the earth shakes, fires burn and the heavens display their signs, perhaps it is time to look beyond the headlines.
Repent while there is time. Pray while there is time. Make peace while there is time. Do good while there is time. The final Hour may be closer than we imagine. And the question is no longer whether the world is ready.
Are we?
