Finding Life in a Conflicted World
By Mustafa Makumba
Many people today feel a deep sense of emptiness, even when their lives seem successful by outside standards. This often comes from living in a fast-paced world that values material success, constant productivity, and external achievements. While these things matter, they rarely bring lasting fulfilment or a true sense of purpose. This struggle is especially common for those trying to balance their personal beliefs with the pressures of modern life. It can lead to a feeling of being “conflicted”, torn between inner values and outside demands.
At the heart of this challenge is the search for meaning beyond temporary rewards. Many philosophies and traditions agree that real contentment comes from a deeper source, one that shapes our values, decisions, and relationships. The Qur’an states: “Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Quran 13:28) This verse serves as a powerful reminder that inner peace isn’t tied to external circumstances. It comes from faith, worship, and living with purpose.
One clear approach focuses on principles like discipline, gratitude, and service to others. These aren’t just abstract ideas but practical ways to live that help people stop seeking constant approval or validation from others. When lived out, everyday actions take on greater meaning and purpose. People facing this internal conflict often take one of three paths. Some push their beliefs aside to fit in with society. Others reject modern life entirely, choosing isolation. And many quietly hold to their values but avoid fully engaging with the world. Each of these comes with challenges and risks. The most balanced path involves staying true to core values while actively navigating the world.
This means trusting in something greater while taking responsible steps, thereby balancing faith with effort. This isn’t easy. Social pressures and media often promote fear, judgment, or shallow values. Many hesitate to openly express their identity, afraid of being misunderstood or excluded. This fear can hold people back from living authentically. But trusting in a higher power can be empowering. It gives strength to stand firm in one’s beliefs, even when the world pushes back. This trust turns challenges into opportunities for growth rather than reasons to give up. In the end, this approach leads to a meaningful life. One where inner values guide choices and external pressures become chances to grow stronger.
