Words That Matter: Why What We Say Shapes the World Around Us?
By Mustafa Makumba
In today’s world of quick conversations, viral posts, and casual exchanges, it’s easy to underestimate the power of our words. A simple sentence, a passing comment, or a careless remark can build or break relationships, strengthen or fracture communities, and even influence the way entire societies think and behave.
Throughout history, words have inspired revolutions, healed broken hearts, and called people to justice. But they have also fuelled conflicts, spread hatred, and left lasting wounds. This is why across different cultures, faiths, and traditions, people are constantly reminded to be mindful of what they say. The Quran, for instance, places particular emphasis on the weight of words. It reminds us: “Not a word does a person utter, but there is an observer ready to record it”. (Quran 50:18)
This verse teaches a valuable lesson about accountability — that every word spoken is noted and carries consequences, whether good or harmful. It encourages us to reflect before we speak, understanding that our words can either be a source of kindness or a weapon of harm.
Consider how often harmless-looking conversations turn into gossip, rumours, or character attacks. What begins as, “Have you heard about so-and-so?” can quickly spiral into narratives that damage someone’s reputation or cause unnecessary conflict. In many societies, the consequences of such conversations can be severe, leading to family disputes, broken friendships, or even public unrest. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said: “Whoever believes in God and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari)
This advice isn’t just for religious occasions or believers. It is a universal principle that can improve daily interactions at home, at work, and in public spaces. Imagine how different workplaces, families, and communities would be if people chose words of kindness, encouragement, and honesty or chose silence when their words might cause harm.
In moments of anger or frustration, it’s often tempting to lash out with words we later regret. But wisdom lies in restraint. Whether it’s through social media posts, phone conversations, or casual remarks, the impact of our words often stretches further than we imagine. Modern communication has made it easier than ever for words to travel. A single online comment can reach thousands in minutes, for better or worse. This makes the call for responsible speech even more urgent today.
Our communities thrive when dialogue is rooted in respect, truth, and empathy. As we go about our daily lives, it’s worth remembering the lasting effect our words have on others. Every greeting, every piece of advice, every criticism, and every joke carries weight. Let’s strive to be people whose words heal, uplift, and inspire — leaving a positive legacy in the hearts of those around us.
