Upholding Integrity Abroad in Diplomacy

By Mustafa Makumba

Recent remarks by Amy Diaz, Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Malawi, have raised serious concerns about the conduct of some Malawians traveling to the United States. Speaking during a Hot Current Programme on Times Television, Diaz accused certain individuals of abusing U.S. visa conditions through overstays, fraudulent asylum claims, and compromised passport integrity.

She revealed that while some Malawians overstay their visas after arrival, others allegedly obtain travel documents under false pretences, including fabricated claims of fleeing political persecution. Even more troubling were claims that nationals from neighbouring countries have acquired Malawian passports to exploit U.S. visa processes. These actions, according to Diaz, erode trust and undermine the integrity of the entire visa system, leading to increased visa denials — even for legitimate applicants.

From a religious perspective, these developments demand honest reflection. Islam holds truthfulness and integrity as core values that should guide a believer’s character, both at home and abroad. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was famously known as Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) even before his prophethood. His life serves as a reminder that integrity is not situational but a constant expectation for Muslims in every aspect of life. Allah commands in the Holy Qur’an: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” (Qur’an 9:119)

Seeking asylum through dishonest claims, overstaying visas unlawfully, or forging documents not only breaches the host country’s laws but also violates divine ethical teachings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized: “Whoever deceives us is not one of us.” (Muslim)

Such conduct brings disrepute not only to the individuals involved but also to their families, communities, and nation. They compromise principles of diplomacy fuelling heated relations between states.  As religious faithful, we are taught to act as ambassadors of our faith and culture wherever we go. This means upholding honesty, respecting laws, and maintaining personal and national dignity in foreign lands.

Moreover, faith teachings oblige believers to honour agreements and legal responsibilities. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) repeatedly warned against deceit, reminding members that breaking covenants and engaging in dishonesty leads to collective harm and loss of trust — both in this life and the Hereafter.

As a God-fearing people, it is our collective duty to safeguard our nation’s reputation and set examples of integrity and upright conduct internationally. May Allah guide us to remain honest and upright, protect the dignity of our country, and inspire others through our good character.
